| The Maungatautari mountain range is an outstanding feature of the horizon to the south-east of Cambridge. The mountain is actually the remains of an old volcano. It consists of over 3000 hectares of bush clad slopes, and is a Department of Conservation reserve administered by the Waipa District Council. | ||||
Several tramping tracks run the length of the range in a north-south direction crossing the two highest peaks Maungatautari (795 meters) and Pukeatua (719 Meters). The remains of numerous fortified sites (PA's) are visible from the roads surrounding the mountain. The Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust has been established to lead a project to restore the ecology of Maungatautari, by removing, introduced mammalian pests and predators from Maungatautari, and restoring the forest.
